Video: Importance Of Tyres In F1

A lot of factors, be it small or big, adds up to becoming number one in F1. You need a good crew, able driver, aerodynamics and such.

Well let’s take a look at the Formula One tyres itself. They’re just not round donut looking tyres, but essential part in an ever progressive F1 development.

The video above entails Willy Rampf, BMW Sauber Technical Director, speaking about tyres.

Facts About F1 Tyres

  • Tyres used in Formula One are built to last less than one race distance.
  • In 2005, tyre changes were disallowed in Formula One
  • Tyre changes were re-instated in 2006, following the dramatic and highly political 2005 United States Grand Prix where Ralf Schumacher driving for Toyota, crashed due to left-rear tyre failure.
  • By regulation, the tyres feature a minimum of four grooves in them.
  • The grooves are there to slow the cars down.
  • A slick tyre, with no indentations, is best in dry conditions.
  • The tyres can be no wider than 355 mm and 380 mm at the front and rear respectively and maximum diameter is 660 mm (670 mm for wet tyre).
  • Slick tyres are to be reintroduced in F1 as of 2009.
  • For the 2007 season Bridgestone became the sole tyre supplier in Formula One with the withdrawal of Michelin

My first real memories of watching TV, when I was young was recalling vivid images of my sporting heroes like Ayrton Senna. With the Singapore GP debuting in my country, I decided to setup a fun blog on F1. Thanks for visiting ... more »
